Thanks to all for cheering the garden on
July 3, 2011
An update on the Southminster garden from Chef Kris Reid. Reach her here.
In the past 3 months our little garden has thrived and provided copious amounts of okra, bush beans, yellow squash, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, oregano, dill and edible flowers. To date, we have harvested over 154 pounds! Some of this we have used in the kitchen here at Southminster. The remainder has been picked up and used at Friendship Trays, Charlotte’s largest meals-on-wheels program. I want to truly thank the residents here that have helped and/or cheered the garden on!
Recently,
as time has been short and the weather too hot to ask for much help in the
garden, I went ahead and pulled the squash plants so I could reseed for
another harvest. The bush beans were also pulled and my daughter, Lillianna,
seeded that bed with pumpkins. In addition, I was able to get a donation of
sweet potato slips from a farmer and got them in the ground last week.
We are fortunate to have been able to put in a drip system (funded by a resident that wishes to remain nameless). This will take away some of the burden of watering, which is a time consuming chore especially on a hot day. Thank you to those of you who have continued to help keep the garden watered in this heat! The plants wouldn’t have made it without you.
Because the produce from the garden is being shared with Friendship Trays, it’s important that everything we harvest is weighed and recorded. For this reason, only the kitchen staff and Garden Committee should be picking the produce. Again, this garden is to support Friendship Trays and provide fresh ingredients to the kitchen at Southminster, it is not designed for individuals to harvest for themselves. Your understanding is greatly appreciated.
On Wednesday, July 6th at 9:30 a.m., we are having a garden committee meeting in the Lounge. If you are interested in the garden please stop by and join us. As for our existing members – I look forward to see in you there.
